Limitations
- Important
- You can also find information about Network environment limitations in the customer documentation for the printer. Use it together with the contents in this documentation.
- Note
- For information on the limitations of the print driver, refer to the Readme document of the respective drivers.
SMB Limitations
SMB limitations are as follows:
Settings
Printer settings
- Pay special attention when you set the IP address. The IP address is the address that manages the overall system. Consult your network administrator before performing the settings.
- Depending on the network environment, subnet mask and gateway settings may be required. Consult your network administrator and perform the required settings.
- If a port is enabled without sufficient memory, it may stop automatically. In this case, you can increase the memory by disabling the inactive ports or changing the memory allocation.
- Set the receiving buffer size (SMB spooler etc.) according to the application environment. Data may not be received if the receiving buffer size is smaller than the sent data.
Client settings
- Pay special attention when you set the IP address. The IP address is the address that manages the overall system. Consult your network administrator before performing the settings.
- Consult your NIS administrator when performing network settings (IP address etc.) on clients managed under NIS (Network Information Service).
When switching off the printer
When the printer's SMB spool setting is set to Memory
All print data spooled to the printer's memory, including data that is being printed, will be deleted. No data will be found when the printer is switched on again. However, if the printer was switched off immediately after a print instruction was sent, the print data may be saved in the client. In this case, when the printer is switched on again, printing will begin with the saved print data even if a new print instruction has been sent.
When the printer's SMB spool setting is set to Hard Disk
All print data spooled to the printer's hard disk, including data that is being printed, will be saved. When the printer is switched on again, printing will begin with the saved print data even if a new print instruction has been sent.
When the printer's SMB spool setting is set to Off
All print data spooled to the printer's receiving buffer, including data that is being printed, will be deleted. No data will be found when the printer is switched on again. However, if the printer was switched off immediately after a print instruction was sent, the print data may be saved in the client. In this case, when the printer is switched on again, printing will begin with the saved print data even if a new print instruction has been sent.
Printing
When the printer's SMB spool setting is set to Memory or Hard Disk
The printer will not receive any data if the size is larger than the hard disk or available memory.
- Note
- If the print data size is larger than the allocated receiving size, the print data may be re-sent immediately, depending on the client. In this case, the client may appear to have stopped responding. To resolve this, stop sending print data from the client.
When the printer's SMB spool setting is set to Off
The printer will not be able to receive print request from another client if it is already receiving data from a client.
When the client's IP address or computer name has been changed
If the client's IP address or computer name has been changed, queries and cancellation requests from the printer cannot be performed properly. Switch off and on the printer again if there is no print data in the receiving buffer of the printer.
- Note
- The control panel can be used to stop or eject print data found in the receiving buffer of the printer. For information on how to use the control panel, refer to the customer documentation for the printer.
When the printer is offline
When the printer is offline and a print instruction is sent from the client, the printer will not be able to receive the data and a write error dialog box will be displayed at the client.

UNIX Limitations
Limitations when using the printer from a UNIX client are as follows:
Environment settings
Printer settings
- Pay special attention when you set the IP address. The IP address is the address that manages the overall system. Consult your network administrator before performing the settings.
- Depending on the network environment, subnet mask and gateway settings may be required. Consult your network administrator and perform the required settings.
- If a port is enabled without sufficient memory, it may stop automatically. In this case, you can increase the memory by disabling the inactive ports or changing the memory allocation.
- Set the receiving buffer memory size according to the application environment. Data may not be received if the receiving buffer size is smaller than the sent data.
Workstation settings
- Pay special attention when you set the IP address. The IP address is the address that manages the overall system. Consult your network administrator before performing the settings.
- The IP address is set by the superuser. Request your network administrator to perform the settings if you do not have superuser rights.
- Depending on the OS version, the setting methods and command absolute paths may differ. For more details, refer to the customer documentation for the respective workstations.
- Consult your NIS administrator when performing network settings (IP address etc.) on workstations managed under NIS (Network Information Service).
- The print languages and modes that are available depend on the printer model and configuration. Check the available print languages and modes first before you specify the settings.
- It is recommended to set only one print language/mode for one printer from the same workstation. If two or more types of print languages/modes were selected, the same job number may be displayed on the workstation display, depending on the query (lpq).
When switching off the printer
When additional hard disk is not installed
All print data spooled to the printer, including data that is being printed, will be deleted. No data will be found when the printer is switched on again.
However, if the printer was switched off immediately after a print instruction was sent, then the print data may be saved in the workstation. In this case, when the printer is switched on again, printing will begin with the saved data even if a new print instruction has been sent.
When an additional hard disk has been installed
All data spooled to the printer, including print data that is being printed, will be saved. When the printer is switched on again, printing will begin with the saved data even if a new print instruction has been sent.
Printing operations
Print (lpr)
- Options (e.g. -m option) not processed by the workstation that is sending out the print instructions will all become invalid.
- Each lpr command can print a maximum of 32 files. If more than 32 files are specified, files from the 33rd file onwards will be ignored, while all files up to the 32nd file will be printed.
- Specify "PSASC" when printing PostScript files in ascii format. Set TBCP to On and data will be processed.
- Specify "PSBIN" when printing PostScript files in binary format. Set TBCP to Off and data will be processed.
- The number of copies specified will become invalid if there is a specification in the PostScript language.
Query (lpq)
- The display of long file names will be truncated.
- A maximum of 64 print instructions can be displayed.
- It is recommended to set only one print language/mode for one printer from the same workstation. If two or more print languages/modes were selected, depending on the query (lpq), the same job number may be displayed on the workstation display.
Cancel (lprm)
- Multiple file print data cannot be cancelled file by file using only one lprm command. Once the print data is cancelled, all the files will also be cancelled at the same time.
- Cancellation becomes invalid if the command was run without specifying any option, or there was no print data corresponding to the specified option.
- Only print data from the workstation that sent the print instruction can be cancelled. Print data from other workstations cannot be cancelled.
- Sometimes, print data being processed for printing cannot be cancelled.
Others
If the IP address of the workstation or the workstation name has been changed, queries or cancellation requests from the printer cannot be performed properly. Switch off and on the printer again when there is no print data spooled on the printer.
- Note
- The control panel can be used to stop or eject print data found in the spooler of the printer. For information on how to use the control panel, refer to the customer documentation for the printer.
